Jeeves in the Offing - PG Wodehouse

A Jeeves and Wooster novel Jeeves is on holiday in Herne Bay, and while he’s away the world caves in on Bertie Wooster. For a start, he’s astonished to read in The Times of his engagement to the mercurial Bobbie Wickham. Then at Brinkley Court, his Aunt Dahlia’s establishment, he finds his awful former head master in attendance ready to award the prizes at Market Snodsbury Grammar School. And finally the Brinkley butler turns out for reasons of his own to be Bertie’s nemesis in disguise, the brain surgeon Sir Roderick Glossop. With all occasions informing against him, Bertie has to hightail it to Herne Bay to liberate Jeeves from his shrimping net. And after that, the fun really starts.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Gr 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Elinor and her family gets their fortune taken away when their father dies. You see the struggles that this has put them all in, and you watch Elinor and Marianne battle love and society. Elinor falls in love with Edward, but it becomes apparent that because of her family's situation the proposal may never come. Although on day Ms. Steele comes to town and tells Elinor of her secret engagement to Edward. Swearing Elinor to secrecy keeps her hurting inside, but cannot tell a soul. Marianne falls in love with Willoughby, but her lack of fortune forces him to marry Ms. Gray who inherits 50,000 pounds. This story follows both Marianne and Elinor, in their journey to find a love that can overcome their lack of riches in life. i would recommend this book if you like romance stories, but be warned this story has a very slow start.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L.Frank Baum

Gr 2-7-Baum's much-loved tale of four unlikely friends and their quest to find the Wizard has been subjected to countless retellings and adaptations, many of them just faint shadows of the original. Here, the entire story is enlivened with luminous watercolors. A combination of full spreads and partial page scenes portrays the group's feats and foibles. As he did so successfully in The Wind in the Willows (Harcourt, 2002), Foreman uses his skillful command of color and light to emphasize the story's sense of adventure and enchantment. Readers many feel a need for sunglasses as they come upon the Emerald City. Subtle humorous details, such as the winged monkeys decked out in Red Baron-style goggles, are sure to elicit chuckles. The expressive fumbling scarecrow is the visual star of the quartet. However, the portrayal of a yellow-haired, nondescript Dorothy is a disappointment. Overall, this is an appealing and accessible alternative to the many cartoon versions of this modern classic.-Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI
